FROM THE DESK OF…
RABBI ELIE WEISSMAN
CHESED COORDINATOR
Maimonides declares that a central mitzvah within our tradition is the v’halachta b’drachav, you shall follow in His path. The Torah enjoins us to mimic the Holy One’s attributes, most specifically His acts of kindness. Included in this list is visiting the sick, consoling a friend in need, clothing the needy, and general acts of kindness. The YUHSG Chesed program seeks to fulfill this mitzvah to its fullest extent. Our goal is to offer our students the opportunity to experience the varied forms of Jewish communal involvement. In school, around school, and in their communities, our students apply their knowledge to the real world Jewish community. We actively seek student involvement. If a young woman has an idea for chesed, we make it happen.
A sampling of some of the varied chesed opportunities that our program offers.
Bikur Cholim
Once per month students can visit St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital. The hospital,
only short trip from our school, serves babies and toddlers recovering from
varied physical ailments. Our students assist in physical therapy, help the kids
play with toys, and read stories to them. The experience brings smiles to
both the patients and the visitors.

Food Drive
Through the initiative of last year’s junior class, we began a pre-Pesach food drive to stock the “Kol Ditzrich” Food Pantry in the Five Towns. Central alone restocked the entire pantry which provides food weekly for needy families on Long Island. Last year’s Freshmen, who collected the most food items, brought the food personally to the Food Pantry, organized it, packed the bags for delivery, and ultimately delivered some of the packages.
Clothing Drive
The students collect children’s clothing and coats to send to needy families in Israel.
Last year we sent two full duffle bags for Ethiopian immigrants in Israel.
Peer Tutoring
Students lend their time and effort to their friends to assist them in classes in which they are struggling. Last year we began Dial-a-Tutor where different students would be
“on call” for questions for their classmates and underclassmen
