Mrs. Rochelle Anziska is the Chairperson of our Social Studies Department. She teaches Global Studies to the ninth and tenth grade and AP European History to the twelfth grades. Mrs. Anziska also serves as the Yearbook Advisor. This is her twentieth year at YUHSG. Before coming to Central, Mrs. Anziska had eight years of experience teaching at junior and senior high schools in the metropolitan area.  

Mrs. Anziska received her B.A. from Stern College. During her undergraduate years, she also spent a year at Hebrew University. Her Master’s degree in History is from Hunter College of the City University of New York. In 1998, she took part in the N.Y. Council of the Humanities China Institute at Bard College.In the summer of 1999, she was chosen to participate in the National Council of the Humanities Seminar on “Vienna: 1890-1940”. Her interest in continuing education also included participation in the Seminar on Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the summer of 2002, she was one of a select group of educators chosen to participate in the Columbia/CUNY Summer Institute for Sephardic and Middle Eastern Studies, and continued in the advanced seminar. In the summer of 2003, she took part in “China and the Cultures of the Silk Road,” a seminar sponsored by the China Institute and Columbia University, as well as the Yivo Institute’s course on “The Distinctive Life of Eastern European Jewry.” In the summer of 2005, she traveled to China as a member of the China Institute’s study tour for teachers. In addition, she was a contributor to the “Sephardic Education Project,” a web-based resource of lesson plans for educators. Mrs. Anziska has also participated in a course for educators on “Islam in Asia” conducted by the Asia Society.

This past summer, Mrs. Anziska participated in the National Council of Humanities Seminar on “World Trade and Consumption from 1450-1900” to enrich her teaching of Global Studies. In addition, she was chosen to participate in a Gilder-Lehrman Summer Seminar entitled The Age of Thomas Jefferson which was held at the University of Virginia and Monticello.

Mrs. Toby Arieh teaches Navi and Chumash. She also serves as the Sophomore Mrs. Toby AriehGrade Advisor. This is her thirty-second year teaching at this location – ten years at Yeshiva High School of Queens and twenty two years at YUHSG.  She has also taught in Israel.

Mrs. Arieh has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from City College and a Teacher’s degree and B.R.E. from Teachers’ Institute of Yeshiva University. She was one of the first recipients of a Gruss Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Mrs. Ofira Bashiry is a member of the Hebrew Language faculty. Mrs. Bashiry holds a B.Ed and a Teacher’s Diploma from Beit Berl College in Kfar Saba, Israel.

In the past, Mrs. Bashiry has taught at the Central Queens Y Community Center, Solomon Schechter School in Queens and at the Solomon and Huberman Elementary Schools in Israel. While in Israel, she also served as the Co-Director of the Hod HaSharon Community Center.

She has participated in the Bar Ilan University seminar for teachers of Tanach, and attended the NETA Hebrew language curriculum development program at Boston’s Hebrew College.

In the summer of 2008, Mrs. Bashiry participated in an advanced course at Bar-Ilan University on the topic of “Leadership and Leaders in the Tanach” which featured lectures by distinguished university professors and a tour of the archeological dig at “Ir David” –The City of David.

Rabbi Ya’akob Ben Baruch joined our Judaic Studies faculty with over twelve years of experience as a mainstream and special-needs teacher as well as an educational consultant. He has taught from the elementary through the high school levels in a variety of communities both in the United States and in Israel. He is the author and designer of a Torah U’mesorah publication “Emes Le’Yaakov”, a curriculum developed for and currently used in Jewish elementary schools in the U.S. and in Europe. Rabbi Ben Baruch is also a seasoned inspirational speaker and is currently delivering a series of classes entitled Sunday Neighborhood Shiurim in Queens.

Rabbi Ben Baruch received hid rabbinical ordination from the Midrash HaSepharadi in Jerusalem and holds a Teaching and Arts Degree from Gratz College and an Outreach Certification from Ner LeElef in Jerusalem.

Mrs. Shulamith Bidermanteaches a full array of courses within the Science Department including Earth Science, Physiology and Forensics, and is our laboratory technician and instructor. She is also the Junior Year Grade Advisor. This is her eighteenth year at YUHSG. In the past, Mrs. Biderman taught Biology at Shevach High School and Prospect Park High School and was a lab instructor at Shulamith High School.

Mrs. Biderman received her B.A. from Brooklyn College.

Ms. Miriam Borenstein is the newest member of our Judaic Studies faculty. Ms Borenstein teaches ninth grade and twelfth grade Chumash as well as classes in Machshevet Yisrael (Jewish philosophy). Ms. Borenstein will also be assisting with student activities as well as serve as freshman class advisor.

Ms. Borenstein, upon her graduation from YUHSG in 2005, was the recipient of our Keter Shem Tov Award. She continued her studies in Israel at Midereshet Mivaseret Yerushalayim and received her BA in Judaic Studies from Stern College in June, 2009. She is currently in the Masters program at Azrieli Graduate School and is a fellow in Give-Back Fellowship program.  Ms. Borenstein initiated and coordinated the Alumna/Senior Chabura learning program at YUHSG in 2008-09

Ms. Borenstein has years of experience in informal Jewish education as well having served as Head Counselor for three years at the NCSY Summer Experience for Girls. She is currently the NCSY chapter advisor in West Hempstead. She has been the JUMP coordinator for our school enabling our students to do outreach in New Orleans and in Cherry Hill. She is assistant coach to our softball team.

Mrs. Susan Brodskyis Chairman of our Math Department. Mrs. Brodskyteaches Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry and AP Statistics. She is the Math Club Advisor and serves as a mentor to members of our freshman grade. 

Mrs. Brodsky holds a B.Sci. in Mathematical Sciences from Stanford University, as well as a Masters of Science Study in Electrical Engineering from the National Technological University, and a Masters of Science Study in Mathematics for Secondary School Teachers from the University of Utah. 

Mrs. Brodsky taught algebra, geometry, advanced algebra, pre-calculus and statistics at the Waterford School, a private college preparatory school in Utah, and was involved in grade advisement and curriculum development there. She has also taught at Yeshiva Toras Chaim South Shore.

Prior to becoming an educator, Mrs. Brodsky worked as a specialist in software design and development, and served as Team Leader on a number of classified projects for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Mrs. Miriam Chopp joins us for her seventeenth year at YUHSG as our Chemistry and AP Chemistry teacher. She also mentors our science teams in a number of state-wide and local competitions. She came to us with ten years of experience teaching Regents Biology, Chemistry and Earth Science at prominent yeshiva high schools in the metropolitan area.

Mrs. Chopp is a Magna Cum Laude graduate in Chemistry from Brooklyn College and holds a Master’s degree in Chemistry/Secondary School Education. Currently, Mrs. Chopp is pursuing her Doctoral degree at Columbia University’s Teachers College. She is also a graduate of Michlalah in Jerusalem and was the recipient of an Empire State Mathematics and Science Teacher’s Fellowship.

Mrs. Chopp is listed in the 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2005, and 2008 editions of Who’s Who in Education.

Mrs. Ruth Fried is the Chairperson of the YUHSG Science Department andthe Coordinator of the Science Institute. She teaches Regents Biology to the ninth grade and Advanced Placement Biology to the eleventh and twelfth grades. She serves as the liaison to the Yeshiva University High Schools/Albert Einstein College of Medicine Joint Summer Research Program. This is her twenty-second year at Central. Previously, she taught Biology Lab at Stern College and at New YorkMrs. Ruth Fried   University.

Mrs. Fried attended Michlalah College for Women in Jerusalem. She is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Stern College for Women, where she majored in Biology and minored in Philosophy as a pre-med student. She was the recipient of the Philosophy and Biology Awards, and holds a Master’s degree in Biology from New York University.

Mrs. Fried is listed in the 1994-2007 editions of Who’s Who in Education. In 1997 she was the recipient of the Yeshiva University High School for Girls Teacher of the Year Award. Mrs. Fried is a member of the Educational Steering Committee for the March of Dimes Nelson Rosenthal Convocation.

In the summer of 2008, Mrs. Fried was selected to attend the Third Sheila Schwartz Family International Leading Science Teacher Seminar at the Davidson Institute of Science Education at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. She received certification to use the Davidson Institute and the British Neufield Foundation Science Literacy Program (LSS – Learning Skills for Science).

Mrs. Vera Glatt teaches all levels of English, Creative Writing, and AP English Language. Mrs. Glatt has over thirty-five years of experience teaching in metropolitan area yeshivot on the junior high school, high school, and college levels.

Mrs. Glatt received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Brooklyn College. She is the recipient of the 2008 New York State English Council’s Educator of Excellence Award.

Ms. Rachel Gross teaches Art Appreciation, Advanced Art, and AP Studio Art.  She has taught at Manhattan Day School, Ramaz, and the Heschel School, as well as at  the Israel Museum and the Jewish Museum. Ms. Gross holds a B.A. in Art from Stern College and is a Master’s candidate in Art Education at Queens College.

Mr. Gordon Hurst
is a veteran member of our Social Studies department. Mr. Hurst teaches AP U.S. History, AP World History, Global History and Business /Economics.   He holds a B.A.(cum Laude)  in History from Hofstra University with a minor in Secondary Education. He was a member of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society. He is also a member of Alpha Sigma Lamda (National Honor Society of Adult Learners). Mr. Hurst  is also the advisor to our Model U.N. team.

Mr. Hurst comes to us with a wealth of experience in the international and domestic business world, having been involved in many ventures, including project work for the America’s Cup and the Olympics.  In March 2004, he served as a member of the Long Island Import Export Association’s panel “Unveiling the Mystique of International Finance.” Mr. Hurst also participated in the International Finance Seminar at the Federal Reserve Bank (2007) and spent a week hosted by the College Board in Fort Collins, Colorado , this past spring, as a reader (and grader) for the AP World History exam. 

Mr. Hurst also teaches at Mesivta Ateres Yaakov in Hewlett.

Rabbi Dr. Chaim Kaminsky teaches Halacha to the entire ninth grade and an elective in Contemporary Halachic Issues to the juniors and seniors. Prior to joining our faculty Rabbi Dr. Kaminsky was an Adjunct Lecturer at Fordham University. He was also a Rebbe in the upper grades at Yeshiva Central Queens (YCQ) from 1990-2002. 

Rabbi Dr. Kaminsky received his B.S. from Touro College. His Master’s Degree in Education is from the Azrieli Graduate School of Yeshiva University. He received his Doctorate in Education from Columbia University’s Teachers College. Rabbi Dr. Kaminsky studied at the Rabbinical Seminary of America/Yeshivat Chofetz Chaim and received ordination from Mesivta Tifereth Jerusalem (Yoreh, Yoreh).

Mrs. Amy Katzis a member of the Social Studies Department. She has been teaching at YUHSG for six years.  She teaches Global Studies and U.S. History and a newly developed course in Current World Issues.   She is the advisor to the Mock Trial team.

Mrs. Katz holds a B.A. in History from SUNY Binghamton, where she minored in Judaic Studies. She received a Master’s degree in Secondary School Social Studies Education from Queens College.

She has participated in the Azrieli Graduate School Summer Seminar for High School Teachers on “Issues and Themes in Holocaust Education” and the China Institute’s “Women in Chinese History.”

Dr. Riki Koenigsberg

Dr. Riki Koenigsberg teaches college-level AP (Introductory) Psychology to our juniors and seniors. This is her twentieth year at YUHSG. Dr. Koenigsberg received her B.A. Cum Laude from Barnard College with Honors in Psychology. Her Master’s degree is from Columbia University’s Teachers College, and her Doctorate from George Washington University, where she studied under an NIMH fellowship.

Dr. Koenigsberg is a licensed psychologist who has been working with children, adolescents, and their families, as well as with senior adults, for over thirty years. She is a consulting psychologist to two area nursing homes and to the Queens Borough Public Library System. She has served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology at Stern College and at Touro College. She also speaks on psychological topics to women’s groups in the Queens community. In January 2005, Dr. Koenigsberg made a presentation – “Applying the Learning, Memory, Motivational, and Thinking Processes Discussed in Introductory Psychology to the Way We Teach the Course” at the National Institute for the Teaching of Psychology Conference in Florida. In 2007, she spent 9 days in Louisville, Kentucky as one of over 350 psychology teachers who read and scored the essays on that year’s AP Psychology exam. They made special accommodations to exempt her from scoring exams on Shabbat and substituted an alternate assignment which was done during the week.   In August, 2008, she presented activities for Psychology teachers (“Games to Explain Human Factors”) at a session of the American Psychological Association meetings in Boston.

Mrs. Karen (Feit) Lavner teaches Jewish History to the twelfth grade and Chumash to the eleventh grade. . She also serves as Grade Advisor to the senior class. In addition, Mrs. Lavner is the faculty advisor for the Names Not Numbers© Holocaust Memorial Project and the coordinator of the senior projects program.

Mrs. Lavner was an Upstate New York Regional Advisor for NCSY from 2004-2006. During those years, she also served as coordinator of the Peer Counseling Program at Stern College for Women.

Mrs. Lavner is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Stern College with a B.A. in Judaic Studies and Psychology. She was awarded the Belkin Scholarship for Academic Excellence, the Miriam Araten Memorial Award for Excellence in Bible, and the Ida Lamport Hurowitz Memorial Award for Excellence in Psychology.

We note with pride that Mrs. Lavner was also the valedictorian of the Yeshiva University High School for Girls Class of 2002.

Mrs. Abby Lerneris our Director of Admissions. She also teaches Women in  Jewish Law to our seniors. This is her twenty-second year at YUHSG.

Mrs. Lerner received her B.A. Magna Cum Laude from Barnard College with Honors in History. She attended Teachers’ Institute of Yeshiva University and Sara Schneirer Teachers’ Seminary in Brooklyn.

She received her M.S. from Columbia University School of Library Science and served for four years as the librarian for the Federal District Court in Newark. 

Mrs. Lerner published the article “Teaching Women in Jewish Law” for Ten Da’at.  Her paper entitled “Thoughts on Teaching Taharat Hamishpacha: The Role of the Teacher,” which was presented at the Orthodox Forum in 2005, was published in the Orthodox Forum volume: Gender Relationships in Marriage and Out. (KTAV, 2007) In 1996, Mrs. Lerner was named YUHSG’s Teacher of the Year. She is a recipient of the Gruss Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2005 Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education.

Rabbi Zvi Lewteaches Halacha to the eleventh grade and Chumash to the 11th and 12th grades. He also serves as advisor to our champion Torah Bowl Team.

In addition to teaching at YUHSG, Rabbi Lew teaches at Ateret Women’s Seminary of Queens College. Before coming to our school, Rabbi Lew was a faculty member at several area yeshivot, including SKA, Westchester Hebrew High School, and Yeshiva Netzach Dovid for Men.

Rabbi Lew holds a B.A. in Psychology from Yeshiva University. He pursued his studies for Rabbinic ordination at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University. He is a Master’s degree candidate at the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education.

Rabbi Daniel Mayeris a member of our Judaic Studies faculty, teaching Halacha (Judaic Law) , Chumash (Biblical Analysis) , Life Cycles and Machshevet Hayahadut (Jewish Philosophy) . He is also Coordinator of  Co-Curricular Religious Programs. 

 Rabbi Mayer holds a B.A. degree from Yeshiva University and a J.D. degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. He is currently a Master’s and Doctoral candidate at the Azrieli School of Education. Prior to coming to YUHSG, Rabbi Mayer taught at the Yeshiva of Flatbush High School and the North Shore Hebrew Academy Middle School, where he was named “Teacher of the Year.” He is also the author of an instructional curriculum for teaching the Holocaust.

Mrs. Coty Nussbaum teaches all levels of French. She freelances as an interior designer. Mrs. Nussbaum joined us seventeen years ago after more than a decade of teaching high school level French in the public schools of France and Switzerland. She has also taught all levels of proficiency at the Alliance Francaise Adult Education Program in New York.

She received her French Teacher’s license as well as a degree in History from Lausanne University. In 1998 Mrs. Nussbaum was nominated by IAAY Johns Hopkins University for the Otto Eberspacher Award for excellence in the teaching of a European language.

This past summer, Mrs. Nussbaum coordinated and personally supervised a trip to Paris for our advanced French students.

Dr. Sharon Petrushka teaches Pre-Calculus and Calculus (AB). She received her Bachelor’s degree Magna Cum Laude from Brooklyn College, with excellence in Mathematics. She was also the winner of the American Statistical Association Chapter Award. She holds a Ph.D from the CUNY Graduate Center, where she was the recipient of a First Year Fellowship.

Dr. Petrushka is currently Associate Professor of Mathematics at the New York Institute of Technology. She is author of “Symmetry Properties of the Zero Sets of Nil-theta Functions,” in the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society.

Mrs. Simone Portteaches Women’s Health and Nutrition tothe senior grade. A professional registered nurse with a specialty in operating room surgical nursing, she has also developed and taught a comprehensive health education curriculum on the high school level, most recently at Maayanot Yeshiva High School.  

Mrs. Port holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and CNOR certification in her  specialty.

Mrs. Tova Fish-Rosenberg

Mrs. Tova Fish-Rosenberg is the Chairperson of the Hebrew Language Department. Mrs. Fish-Rosenberg has extensive experience as a curriculum developer and teacher of Hebrew as a second language, both in Israel and the United States. In addition, as the creator of the acclaimed "Names, Not Numbers©" Intergenerational Holocaust Oral History Project, she serves as an educational consultant to a number of middle schools and high schools. She is also the Director of Hebrew Language at MTA. She has authored a number of curriculum manuals for Jewish education in the Diaspora, and is co-authors, together with Mrs. Elite Shaier of our Hebrew Language Department, of the textbook used in our 11th and 12th grade conversational Hebrew Ulpan course.

Mrs. Fish Rosenberg is also the Director of the YUHS Israel Exchange programs – the Ulpanat Zvia program with our school and the Makor Chaim program with MSTA.

Mrs. Fish-Rosenberg holds a B.A. (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from Washington University in History and Hebrew and Jewish Studies. Her M.A. (with Honors) in European and American History is from St. Louis University. She has also studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Webster University in St. Louis, and continued her doctoral studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. .

Before coming to YUHSG, Mrs. Fish-Rosenberg served as Hebrew Language Consultant at HAFTR and at the Emery Weiner School in Houston, Texas. She was the Principal of the Rabbi David L. Silver Yeshiva Academy in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and the United Synagogue Day School in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

Mrs. Fish Rosenberg was a lecturer at seminar Hakibbutzim College of Education in tel Aviv. Her courses included Methods of teaching Hebrew as a Foreign Language and Jewish Education in the Diaspora. In addition, she was the on-site Director for the Washington University in St. Louis Study Abroad program in conjunction with Hebrew University.

Mrs. Fish-Rosenberg is the recipient of Yeshiva University’s Baumel Faculty Incentive Award in recognition of the "Names, Not Numbers©" Project. She is the only non-YU faculty member to be so honored

Ms. Lisa Rothstein teaches ninth and tenth grade English and an elective in Creative Writing. She also coaches our champion College Bowl team and serves as faculty advisor for The Courier, our award winning newspaper. .

She received her B.A. with special honors in English from the University of Chicago. Her Master’s degree is from the University of Chicago as well.

Before coming to YUHSG, Ms. Rothstein taught at the Akiba Schechter School in Chicago and at the Ramaz Middle School. She was also the editor of the verbal section of the Princeton Review:1014 GRE Questions.

Ms. Rothstein is the recipient of the 2009 New York State English Council Educator of Excellence Award.

Mrs. Elite Shaier teaches Ivrit  (Hebrew Language) to grades nine and ten, and the Ulpan (Modern Conversational Hebrew)  class to the eleventh grade. She is co-author, together with Mrs. Tova Fish-Rosenberg, of the “Darkon L’Yisrael” conversational Hebrew textbook being used in the Ulpan course, geared to preparing students for travel and study abroad. She has taught Hebrew Language and History in both Israel and the U.S.

She holds a B.A. and an M.A. with Honors in History from Bar Ilan University. She also holds a B.Ed with Honors and Certification to teach Hebrew as a second language from Seminar HaKibbutzim College of Education.

Rabbi Mordekai Shapiro is Chairman of the Talmud/Halacha Department. He currently teaches Halacha to the tenth grade, Life Cycles to the eleventh and twelfth grades, Tefilla to the ninth and tenth grades, and the History of Religious Zionism elective to grades eleven and twelve. He has also taught Jewish History, Gemara, and Machshevet Yisrael. He serves as Faculty Advisor to Arista and to our annual Haggada publication. Rabbi Shapiro is the Rabbi of Congregation Ohr Torah of North Woodmere. He has been with YUHSG for over twenty years, but also taught for many years at our current location when our building housed the Yeshiva High School of Queens. He has served as coordinator of the Bet Din of the Rabbinical Council of America and is currently a member of the Beth Din Zedek-Eyn Moshe. For twenty-two years Rabbi Shapiro served as the spiritual leader of the Young Israel of Jackson Heights.

Rabbi Shapiro received his B.A. from Brooklyn College Summa Cum Laude and his Master’s degree from the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Yeshiva University. He received smicha from the Rabbi Jacob Joseph Yeshiva.

In the summer of 2005, Rabbi Shapiro participated in the David Project’s first educators’ seminar, to introduce more effective Israel Advocacy programming into the History of Religious Zionism curriculum and into co-curricular activities. He is currently implementing that program here at YUHSG.

Mrs. Lynda Smith is our Athletic Director. She also teaches Physical Education to all grades and has taught Applied Science (Health and Nutrition) to juniors and seniors. Mrs. Smith also coaches our tennis team.  Mrs. Smith maintains an on-going involvement in many sports-related activities as an official and coach for gymnastics and soccer competitions. Mrs. Smith served as Athletic Director and Chairman of the Health and Physical Education Department of the Maria Regina High School. She also taught Health and Physical Education in the Levittown and Rockville Center School Districts and serves as a consultant to the Rockville Centre School District. Mrs. Smith is the Vice President of the Nassau County Board of Gymnastics High School Officials and a member of the New York State Board of Gymnastic Officials. 

She holds a B.S. degree Summa Cum Laude in Health and Physical Education from C.W. Post College, where she received the Departmental Award. Her Ph.A. degree in Exercise Physiology is from Adelphi University. Mrs. Smith was recognized as Coach of the Year from NSCHSGAA Gymnastic Teams and received certification an as Exercise Test Technologist from the American College of Sports Medicine. She also holds an Advanced Regional Diploma from the NSCAA.

Rabbi Shlomo Tiechtel has taught Chumash and Navi at YUHSG for over thirty years. In Israel, he studied at Yeshivat Kol Torah and Brysk and received his smicha from Yeshivat Chabad. Before coming to the United States in 1967, he taught at the Ponevitz Yeshiva K’Tanah.

In addition to teaching at YUHSG, Rabbi Tiechtel has served as a consultant at Machon Chana where he has guided ba’alei teshuva from all over the world. He has also taught Ketuvim at Stern College. Rabbi Tiechtel is a recipient of the Gruss Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Rabbi Tiechtel is the grandson of Rabbi Yissacher Shlomo Tiechtel – author of “Aim HaBanim S’maicha” and of the responsa “Mishna Sachir”.

Mrs. Judith Tiger, Chairman of the English Department, teaches twelfth grade English, as well as the AP English Literature elective.  She is the advisor to our award-winning Literary Journal Avenues of Expression.  This is her twenty-second year as a teacher at YUHSG.  Previously, she taught at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn.

 Mrs. Tiger received her B.A. in English, Cum Laude from Brooklyn College. She was also a member of the Education Honor Society.  Her Master’s degree in English Literature is from New York University. In 1999, Mrs. Tiger was selected to participate in the Columbia/CUNY Summer Institute for Sephardic and Middle Eastern Studies.  She is named in the 2005 and 2006 editions of Who’s Who Among American Teachers.  She is the recipient of the 2005 New York State English Educator of Excellence Award, and serves as an educational consultant to other metropolitan area schools.

Rabbi Elie Weissman teaches Gemara to grades nine through eleven, as well as Chumash and Navi on various grade levels. Rabbi Weissman serves as the Rabbi of the Young Israel of Plainview. Rabbi Weissman will be lecturing this year in the 5Towns on Kohelet and Shir Hashirim through the the Tanach BeShanah program.

Before coming to YUHSG, Rabbi Weissman taught Gemara for three years at the  Yeshiva of Flatbush High School, where he was the recipient of an Avi Chai Foundation teacher-training grant.

Rabbi Weissman was a founder of Yeshiva University’s Eimatai Fellowship High School Leadership Program. He has also served as Director of Youth Services at the Young Israel of Great Neck and Rabbinic Intern at the Young Israel of Windsor Park.

Rabbi Weissman received his B.A. Cum Laude in English from Yeshiva University and his Master’s degree in Bible from the Bernard Revel Graduate School. He was ordained at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University

Mr. Jason Williams

Mr. Jason Williamsis the Science Research/Methodology instructor for the YUHSG Science Institute. He holds a B.S. degree in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook, and is currently an educator at the Dolan DNA Learning Center of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. An experienced researcher in his own right, he has mentored and supervised many high school students for independent research projects, and has had several Intel Science Talent Search semi-finalists and top winners. Mr. Williams has also created (and currently runs) a program at Cold Spring Harbor to involve advanced high school research students in the international scientific conferences held annually at the Laboratory.

Mrs. Bidy Winkler is a member of our World Language Department.  She teaches Spanish to the ninth, tenth and eleventh grades. She has been an Mrs. WinklerAdjunct Lecturer in French and Spanish at Queens College for eleven years.

An experienced public school teacher as well, Mrs. Winkler holds a B.A. with Honors in Hispanic Languages and Literature from Queens College, where she was president of the Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honor Society. She was also a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. 

Mrs. Winkler is a member of the Instituto Cervantes which is one of the largest organizations in the world responsible for promoting the study and the teaching of Spanish language, literature and culture.

In 2002, Mrs. Winkler participated in a research project at Queens College tracing the origins of Ladino and Haketia, the Judeo-Spanish dialects. Currently, Mrs. Winkler is an active member of a Haketia Club, a club which researches and celebrates Spanish Jewish Heritage.

Mrs. Winkler holds a Master’s degree in Hispanic Languages and Literature.

Mr. Jonathan Wolf

Mr. Jonathan Wolf teaches Physics to the eleventh and twelfth grades. Mr. Wolf also teaches Physics at Scarsdale High School. He served as an Adjunct Professor of Astronomy at Hofstra University from 2000-2004.

Mr. Wolf received his B.A. in Physics from Queens College. He received his Master’s Degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Rochester and his Ed.M in Secondary School Science Education from Columbia University Teacher’s College.

Mr. Wolf has published extensively in a wide variety of scientific and educational journals. He is the author of three review books: “Barron’s How to Prepare for the Advanced Placement Examination Physics B,” “Barron’s College Review: Physics,” and “Barron’s How to Prepare for the SAT II Physics - Ninth Edition.”

Mrs. Rena Wolf is Chairperson of the Tanach Department and teaches Navi to the ninth and eleventh grades. She has been at YUHSG for twenty-eight years.  

Mrs. Wolf received her B.A. with Honors from Bar Ilan University. She received her Master’s degree in Bible from the Bernard Revel Graduate School. She is currently mentoring Ms. Miriam Borenstein as part of the Azrieli graduate School Give-Back fellowship program. 

Mrs. Wolf is a recipient of a Fellowship at the Bernard Revel Graduate School and has received the Joseph S. Gruss Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Mrs. Betty York joins our Mathematics department teaching all levels of Algebra, Geometry and Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Mrs. Yorkreceived her B.S. in Mathematics (Magna Cum Laude) from City University of New York, followed by her Master of Arts in Math Education (Summa Cum Laude) also from CUNY. She is a Phi Beta Kappa member and received her Juris Doctor from Hofstra University.

Mrs. York has previously taught at North Shore Hebrew Academy in Great Neck, as well as in TAG in far Rockaway. She began her career at the Bronx High School of Science.

Mrs. York’s three daughters are all graduates of Yeshiva University High School for Girls.

Mrs. Michele Zoltan joins us for her sixteenth year teaching Jewish History. She currently teaches the Classical and Medieval Jewish History course to the eleventh grade and has also taught the senior level Modern Jewish History course and the Yeshiva University Jewish History College Equivalency course. She is our Assistant Director of Admissions and edits the weekly “Central Update.” 

Mrs. Zoltan is a Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brooklyn College, having spent her junior year at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Her M.A. and M.Phil. degrees in Jewish History are from Columbia University, where she also received a President’s Fellowship. In addition, she is the recipient of a Doctoral Scholarship from the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. In 1998, she was chosen to participate in the Summer Institute for Sephardic and Middle Eastern Studies at Columbia University, and later continued in the advanced seminar. She was also an invited contributor to the “Sephardic Education Project” held at CUNY, creating web-based lesson plans for educators. In the summer of 2006, Mrs. Zoltan was one of the select participants in the Center for Online Judaic Studies/NYU Steinhardt School of Education’s workshop “The Future of the Past: Digital Imaging, the Internet, and Jewish History Education,” developing innovative curricular materials for classroom use.

Before coming to YUHSG, Mrs. Zoltan served as a visiting instructor in History at Stern College, editorial consultant to Jason Aronson Publishers, and consultant in Jewish Children’s Literature to the Jewish Book Council. She continues to lecture for adult education programs throughout the New York area.
