Mrs. Harriet Sklar has been associated with YUHSG for twelve years – first as Assistant Principal and now as our Associate Principal.  In addition, she is the faculty advisor for Arista, our chapter of the National Honor Society.

Mrs. Sklar worked for fifteen years in the N.Y.C. Public School System, the last four as Assistant to the Principal and Staff Developer at Public School 27 in the South Bronx. Mrs. Sklar has also been a professor of writing at the Touro College School of General Education.

 She received her B.A. from the College of New Rochelle and her Master’s degree in Education from Lehman College.  She received a graduate degree in School Leadership from St. John’s University, and is NY State certified as a School Building Leader.   In 1993, she received the Greater New York Alumni Research Award conferred by Lehman College. During the course of her career, Mrs. Sklar has been the recipient of numerous N.Y. State grants including grants for Technology, Bilingual Education, Urban Schools, and Comprehensive Education. Last year, she was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities “Picturing America” grant, which has been adapted to our own Social Studies Department curriculum. She is also a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the international association for professional educators.

In addition to her work in the Public School System, Mrs. Sklar has been an Educational Consultant and has developed presentations on Teaching, Language and Curriculum.

From 1994-1998, Mrs. Sklar served as President of the Parent Council of Yeshiva University H.S. for Girls. Her professional affiliations include memberships in Kappa Delta Phi, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the  National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Association of Reading Teachers, the National Council of Social Studies, and the Association of Orthodox Jewish Teachers. She is listed in the 2006 Honors Edition of the Manchester Who’s Who Registry, the 2007-08 VIP Cambridge edition of Who’s Who – Executives and Professionals, and in the 2008-09 Premier VIP edition. Mrs. Sklar attended the Harvard University Graduate School of Education Principals’ Summer Institute. She also participated in the PEJE (Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education) Community of Practice and chaired a committee for Middle States Accreditation Evaluation.

Mrs. Sklar is currently chairing the school’s Middle States evaluation in preparation for our November visitation.  Mrs. Sklar has also accompanied our students on their Project Ra’yut Chesed Mission to Israel.

 

Mrs. Abby LernerMrs. Abby Lerner

Mrs. Abby Lerner is our Director of Admissions. She also teaches Women in Jewish Law to our seniors. This is her twenty-second year at YUHSG.

Mrs. Lerner received her B.A. Magna Cum Laude from Barnard College with Honors in History. She attended Teachers’ Institute of Yeshiva University and Sara Schneirer Teachers’ Seminary in Brooklyn.

She received her M.S. from Columbia University School of Library Science and served for four years as the librarian for the Federal District Court in Newark.

Mrs. Lerner published the article “Teaching Women in Jewish Law” for Ten Da’at. Her paper entitled “Thoughts on Teaching Taharat Hamishpacha: The Role of the  Teacher,” which was presented at the Orthodox Forum in 2005, was published in the Orthodox Forum volume: Gender Relationships in Marriage and Out. (KTAV, 2007) In 1996, Mrs. Lerner was named YUHSG’s Teacher of the Year. She is a recipient of the Gruss Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2005 Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education. 

Mrs. Yvette Finkelstein

Mrs. Yvette Finkelstein is the Director of Recruitment at YUHSG and will be working closely with Mrs. Abby Lerner, Director of Admissions and Mrs. Michelle Zoltan, Assistant Director of Admissions.

Mrs. Finkelstein is a Cum Laude graduate of Brooklyn College, where she received her B.A. degree. She received her M.S. degree in counseling psychology from Fordham University. For many years, Mrs. Finkelstein was associated with Westchester Day School in Mamaroneck, NY, where she served as Jewish Continuity Coordinator, Admissions Coordinator and then as Cultural Arts Coordinator. Mrs. Finkelstein introduced many innovative programs to WDS, including the Learning to Look art appreciation program, the Jewish Heritage Museum project, Grandparents’ and Special Persons’ Day, as well as running school-wide shabbatonim, holiday celebrations and fund-raising projects. At the Reuben Gittelman Hebrew Day School in New City, NY, Mrs. Finkelstein served as the Director of Admissions, completely systematizing and organizing the office. She also completed the prestigious docent program at The Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in NYC.

Mrs. Estee R. Shor is our Assistant to the PrincipalsShe brings more that fourteen  years of managerial experience and organizational expertise to the efficient running of our school. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Stern College and was active for many years in the field of informal Jewish education.
