Advanced Art
Open to Juniors and Seniors

The goals of this course are to introduce students to basic principles of drawing, painting, and sculpture. These include still life, portraiture, abstraction, and three-dimensional design, as well as collage and photograms. In addition, students will study the works of artists including Mary Cassatt, Van Gogh, Degas, Renoir, Monet, Picasso, and others.

Advanced Placement Studio Art

In Advanced Placement Studio Art, each student chooses from one of three categories of portfolios (3-D design, 2-D design, or Drawing) to present to the College Board as the “exam” for course grade. The portfolio is in three parts. Two of these demonstrate the quality and the variety of techniques, media, subject matter and ideas. The third part is the concentration, which is like a visual term paper, showing investigation, growth and discovery involved with a compelling visual concept. There are both class and homework assignments and students keep a sketchbook throughout the year. A wide variety of media is explored. Students are expected to perfect drawing skills and produce artwork demonstrating high quality craftsmanship and a thorough understanding of the principles of design.

Photography

will learn to appreciate photography as an artistic medium and how to enhance and modify
their photographic portfolio using Adobe Photoshop and other photo enhancement
software.
