The World Language Department
General Studies

The study of a world language (other than English) has become a requirement for obtaining a New York State Regents diploma. While we ask all students to take the Hebrew Regents and take three years of Hebrew Language, we strongly recommend the study of an additional world language. By studying either French or Spanish, the students gain an appreciation for culture, as well as enhance their English language vocabulary and grammar skills.

Grade Nine:

French I

This course introduces the student to the grammar, vocabulary and basic structure of the French language. Using a first-year text and workbooks, students will acquire knowledge of French to allow them to speak, write and read the language.

Spanish I

This course introduces the student to the grammar, vocabulary and basic structure of the Spanish language. Using a first-year text and workbooks, students will acquire knowledge of Spanish to allow them to speak, write and read the language.

Grade Ten:

French II

This course continues the study of the French language. In the second year, students will continue to master grammar and vocabulary. In addition, a study of basic literature in the language will develop reading skills and an appreciation of the French culture.

Spanish II

This course continues the study of the Spanish language. In the second year, students will continue to master grammar and vocabulary. In addition, a study of basic literature in the language will develop reading skills and an appreciation of the Spanish-speaking cultures of the world.

Grade Eleven:

French III

This course is a continuation of French II and introduces the student to the study of French literature. Additional topics of grammar are introduced and a thorough review begins in preparation for the New York State Regents examination in French.

Spanish III

This course is a continuation of Spanish II. The subjunctive mood is studied in depth. The second half of the year is dedicated to an intensive and thorough review of grammar. Films, magazines and newspapers are used to reinforce and create an authentic Spanish atmosphere. Students will be prepared for the New York State Regents examination in Spanish.

Grade Twelve:

French IV

This course is offered to students who have completed French III. It is a literature class that includes the basic study of French authors from the 17th through 19th centuries, including Corneille, Racine, Moliere, La Fontaine, Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo. This course is taught in French using either the original works of the authors or versions geared specifically to foreign language students. The use of visual arts, theatre performance and historical background enhances the students’ understanding of the subject matter. The influence and/or societal contribution of each of the authors are also explored in detail.
