High School Profile

H.S. Profile

Student Population

The student body consists of approximately 268 women in grades 9-12 who commute daily from the metropolitan area. First and second generation students from Iran, Russia, Bukharia and Israel illustrate our commitment to cultural diversity.

Academics

In ninth and tenth grades, most courses are offered on an Honors and regular level. In eleventh grade only select courses are offered on an Honors or Accelerated level. Honors designation indicates a rigorous course of study which exceeds New York State Regents requirements and is based on a greatly enriched curriculum. Advanced

Placement courses may be elected in tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. Within our school, we also house a special education program (P'Tach).

Grade Point Averages are UNWEIGHTED and UNRANKED.

G.P.A.s are computed be averaging with equal weight the units of study in all Judaic and secular courses (excluding minor subjects).

We grade on a numerical scale of 50-100; a score of 65 designates a passing grade. P indicates that a student has satisfactorily completed the course but no numerical rating is assigned or averaged in.

Each semester, students are required to fulfill five community service requirements. The requirements include two Internal Opportunities, two External Opportunities, and one Extended Project. Internal Opportunities include programs offered by our school such as a hospital visit, or a trip to a soup kitchen.  External Opportunities involve participating in a community service activity outside of school (for example, assisting at a synagogue or youth program).  The Extended Project calls for students to commit themselves to a community service program on at least four occasions (for example, volunteering at a nursing home, hospice visitations, etc.)

Our high school meets and exceeds New York State Regents standards and we are accredited by the Middle States Commision on Secondary School Education.

Arista (Armin Steif Chapter), The National Honor Society

For the school year ending 2009, 18 Juniors and 26 Seniors were members of Arista.  A member must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 90 for six semesters in Honors level courses or 93 in Regular level courses.  Community service and the demonstration of high moral character are required of all members.

Honor Roll

For the school year 2009, 141 students were awarded designation on the Honor Roll having achieved a grade point average of 90 or more as well as demonstrating character befitting an honor student.

Distinguished Scholars

A limited number of scholarships based on merit are awarded annually to entering freshmen who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and exemplary character in middle school.  This scholarship is renewable each year and the distinction is noted on the recipient’s transcript.
